Cupping therapy is a traditional Chinese medicine therapy that has been used for over 3000 years. It became popular in North America in recent years, when it started to gain attention from athletes and celebrities, which in turn brought it to the mainstream. One of the first to gain media coverage was Michael Phelps when he had “cupping marks” on his body during the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
Cupping involves the placement of special cups on different areas of the body. There are different types of cups and techniques and suction levels used which all provide a vacuum effect called negative pressure. This causes the skin to draw upward into the cup allowing the free flow of qi and blood to the area.
