Clean eating: How to properly wash fruits and veggies

Not washing your fruit and vegetables properly can lead to health problems including exposure to harmful chemicals.

Before enjoying our favourite fruit or vegetable this summer, make sure you’ve cleaned it thoroughly by removing all of the germs and pesticides that may be present. Below we look at how to properly clean fruits and vegetables.

Grapes and Berries

First off, you’ll want to buy a bottle of fruit and vegetable cleaner from the store. They cost about $4.00 and are great for removing at least 98% of all pesticides, chemicals and waxes. But remember, you’ll still need to use good old-fashioned water too.

For fruits and berries, rinse them under cool water, but don’t allow them to sit. Berries sitting in water can ruin them quickly. Sort through them and get rid of any mold and wash again.

Leafy Green Veggies

For single heads of vegetables, cut off the base and remove the outward leaves that may be dry or damaged. For the rest of the leaves, soak in water for at least two minutes. To remove any bacteria add some vinegar or pre-wash with vegetable spray. The final step is rinsing and drying with a paper towel.

Apples, Peaches, etc

Firm types of fruit are fairly easy to clean. The best method is to wash with fruit cleaner to remove the waxy buildup. Next, simply run under water to ensure the wax, debris and spray is completely removed.


Melons are among the best tasting fruits out there. They’re a refreshing treat that can be enjoyed all year round, but especially in the summer. To make sure you properly wash melons, use a vegetable brush and spray to wash the melon while running it under warm water.


Herbs can add the finishing touches to any meal. They can be tricky to wash, and can trap debris, germs and pesticides easily. The best way to wash your favourite herbs is by dipping them into a bowl of water and drying them with a paper towel. For good measure, spray with fruit wash before rinsing.


It’s easy to mistake dirt and debris as part of a mushroom. For scrubbing, use a soft brush and wash gently and use a paper towel to clean off the dirt.

Root Vegetables

Root vegetables include carrots, potatoes and beets. The first step is to peel them followed by scrubbing them under warm water until all the dirt, debris and chemicals are removed.

Fruits and vegetables provide great taste and healthy vitamins and nutrients we need to look and feel our best. Not washing them properly can lead to a whole host of health problems including exposure to harmful chemicals. No matter which type of fruit or vegetable you’re washing, the most important step is doing a thorough job.
