Weights before cardio or cardio before weights?  Is one better than the other?

Generally, weight training is done first so you have the most energy to build muscle. As for which is better, it depends on your overall goals.

If you are just looking to lose or maintain weight, weight training is your best bet. The more muscle mass you have, the higher your metabolism. That means you will burn MORE calories than someone of the same size with LESS muscle. Furthermore, when you do cardio, you will burn much more calories again because your greater muscle mass burns more calories!

If you are an endurance athlete, a lot of “size” doesn’t do you a lot of good. Still, weight training is important for ALL sports and walks of life. Just keep the weight low and reps high and continue to perform cardio after the weight training.
