Accessing Physiotherapy Services During the COVID19 Restrictions?

Here at ProActive Rehab we are offering online assessments and treatment sessions. This is done through a secure platform to maintain confidentiality and meets the requirements of the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). Many Extended Healthcare Benefits companies are covering online appointments just as they would an in-person appointment. We have a list here at the clinic of these companies, however as changes to healthcare coverages are happening rapidly at this time, you may wish to call your insurance company to confirm your coverage.

The College of Physiotherapists of Ontario and the Ministry of Health have advised that, except in an extreme emergency, in-person physiotherapy treatment is currently restricted. However, this does not mean that you cannot access Physiotherapy services during these restrictions.

As physiotherapists, we do not require you to have a Doctors referral to see us for an assessment and treatment. Some Extended Healthcare Benefit companies do usually require a referral. However, as seeing a Family Physician can be challenging currently, it may be that your insurance company will waive this requirement. Again, you may need to confirm with your insurance company.

Once we have scheduled an appointment with a Physiotherapist, you will receive an email invite to your online appointment. All you need is a device with a camera and microphone, such as a computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone. During the appointment, you and the therapist converse via video and a history will be taken just as it would at an in-person appointment. Then the physiotherapist may ask you to perform a range of motion of the affected area and may ask you to demonstrate some functional tests. Based on what the Physiotherapist sees, you will be prescribed a home treatment programme, which may include a range of motion exercises, stretches, strengthening, functional exercises, and relaxation techniques as determined by the Physiotherapist.

Just as at an in-person appointment, you will have the opportunity to ask questions at any time and a Treatment Plan will be agreed with you. A copy of the plan will be emailed to you after the assessment, along with a copy of any exercises that were proposed. A follow-up appointment will be scheduled and you will receive an email invitation to that appointment. Your Physiotherapist will be available by email every day if you have any questions or concerns.

Please contact us at ProActive Rehab if you would like to find out more, and to book your online Physiotherapy assessment.
