The Naturopathic Approach to Managing PCOS

Naturopathic or botanical medicine, nutrition and dietary modifications will be a main part of the individualized treatment plan to decrease production of male hormones, help balance blood sugar levels, lower cholesterol and to establish a healthy weight.

PCOS, or polycystic ovarian syndrome is an endocrine disorder marked by hormone imbalances, and is the leading cause of infertility. There is an increased production of male hormones, mainly testosterone, which is the cause of most of the symptoms. Although the exact cause is unknown, there does seem to be a genetic predisposition. It is often accompanied by insulin resistance, diabetes, and obesity. Despite it’s name, not all women with PCOS have ovarian cysts.

Symptoms of PCOS can include:

  • Infertility
  • Acne
  • Abnormal menstruation
  • Ovulatory issues
  • Obesity
  • Abnormal hair growth
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
