The word "LASER" in relation to cosmetic procedures makes me nervous; should I be?The word "laser" is an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.
The answer to this question is both yes and no.
No, you need not be nervous, as all lasers that are sold legally in Canada have gone through stringent testing by a governing body whom then assign a CE number to lasers that are safe. This CE number indicates that when used for the purpose that they are designed the laser will not cause harm to an individual.
Yes, you should be nervous if the laser is operated by an untrained individual, the results can be disastrous for the client. I have seen what a untrained operator is capable of and it is not pretty. Many times clients have come to me to have their laser "accidents" treated - which can be painful, expensive, and not always corrected to the degree before the botched laser treatment.
With so many second hand lasers on the market now; there is no telling into whose hands they are sold and the degree of training the operator has received - each laser is different and each laser can be potentially dangerous in the wrong hands.
All our lasers are purchased directly from the manufacturers and all our technicians have been trained on the lasers. We have a regular maintenance contract for the lasers, as well as a Medical Laser Safety Officer on site, trained by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia.
If you are not sure about your safety, always ask for proof of training, and how the laser was obtained.
